Borders That I Have Crossed In Africa
Posted: October 31, 2024 | Tagged: Border Crossings
I have travelled extensively in 29 of the 55 African countries. Nothing comes easy in Africa, which is why it's such a fantastic continent to visit. Go Hardcore - Go Overland.
This post details border crossings made by land or sea within Africa but just for the record:
I flew out of Tunisia, Morocco, Kenya, Egypt, Madagascar and I flew out of South Africa. And I flew into Egypt, Kenya 2x, and Madagascar.

I also entered Africa 5 times by ferry, 4 times from Spain, and once from the Middle East. And left Africa twice, both times to Spain (Ceuta):

Spain to Morocco - Algeciras to Tangier Med - Ferry 2 June 024
Spain (Melilla) to Morocco 15 December 2012

Jordan to Egypt - Aqaba to Nuweibaa - Ferry - 5 Nov 2010
Morocco to Spain (Ceuta) - 10 March 2008 / 11 June 2024
In 2016, I walked/hitchhiked from the Sani Lodge to the Sani Pass Border Post a distance of 15 km then up the Sani Pass, another 8 km into Lesotho:

I have made 30 border crossings (28 different ones as I went through two both ways) entirely within Africa to African countries (Ceuta and Melilla are Spanish Territories in Africa).
The bush taxis in West Africa were hardcore and a bane of my travels. The endless waiting wore me down. Here, I am waiting again, at the border between Senegal and Guinea-Bissau for the locals to pay the bribes so we could continue.

I crossed between Zambia and Botswana in both directions. The second time I walked across the Kazungula Bridge:
Another breakdown on the road less travelled in West Africa. I rode in a Landy from Gabe in Guinea-Bissau to the border with Guinea at Kandika. After being processed, there was 2 km of very bad road in another shared taxi to the Guinea immigration office, then another to Saréboido and finally the last bus taxi of the day to the town of Koundara, where I got lodgings at a brothel, the only place in town to sleep.
This is 1 of 2 of my proudest border crossings in Africa. That day, I'd travelled hardcore from Tambakounda to Kidira, a distance of 360 km, and after crossing the Senegal-Mali border, I journeyed another 96 km, arriving in the town of Kayes at 11pm and spent an hour looking for a hotel. Crazy days.
