Cyprus is a member of the European Union, and a fully paid-up member of the United Nations. They have used the Euro since 2008, BUT are NOT in the Schengen Zone.
They gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1960 and is known as the Republic of Cyprus.
Cyprus is the whole island, but the northern part, which is regarded as an illegal occupation, after the Turkish military invaded Cyprus in 1974, is referred to as Northern Cyprus or the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
