The Sign of a Real Traveller? - Everywhere Is Game

March 10 2023

From Bletchley to Birmingham, Kong to Karosta, Cairo to Cape Town, nowhere is beyond the reach of Nomadic Backpacker. Everywhere is game.

I am a budget traveller, a nomadic traveller. I am Nomadic Backpacker. And I'm not all about nice.

While nice is indeed nice, and I do do nice, sometimes, it's just nice is boring.

I'd rather do something a little more exciting, like backpacking Côte d'Ivoire.

I backpacked Kong, where you'll find one of only a handful of mud mosques in West Africa. I also backpacked Yamoussoukro, Abidjan and Grand Bassam but these didn't make the blog but a post about backpacking Sassandra and San Pedro did

I am the only traveller I know who has backpacked the mud mosque in Kong!

In Estonia, I headed to
Narva, right on the border with Russia:

When my dad passed last year and I had to return to England, I backpacked my home town of Bletchley, Home of the Codebreakers where Alan Turing cracked the Enigma Code and help shorten the war by a couple of years.

I have travelled the world, backpacked more than 100 countries yet I can still go and backpack places close to home.

Bletchley Park is, was, just 12 minutes walk from where I grew up, 12 minutes from where I was born.

The UK has amazing history. Castles and churches over 1000 years old, National parks, lakes, some of the most beautiful lochs in the world are in Scotland, rugged hills, beautiful landscapes.

I am here in England again, because needs must and I whilst I sort things I might as well, put the time to good use.

Recently I backpacked the market town Aylesbury.

Did you know, that Aylesbury's market square is the market square referred to in David Bowie's classic song, "5 Years". 'Pushing through the market square' was the opening line.

Just in the last days I went and backpacked London, again. I made a music-themed vuelta of my country's capital city.

In between backpacking the spots where album covers were shot, like The Clash Steps in Camden Market or Chalk Farm underground station where Madness posed for the album Absolutely, I went and backpacked the former Free and Independent Republic of Frestonia where a group of squatters set up shop back in the late 70s and had declared independence.

The focal point of the Frestonia community was The People's Hall, which is where The Clash recored their 5th studio album, Combat Rock at Ear Studios back in 1982. The album Combat Rock, featured hits such as Rock the Casbah and Should I Stay or Should I Go.

Aztec Camera even made an album and named it Frestonia.

I also went and backpacked the East Side at Highgate Cemetery where Karl Marx is buried. Fascinating stuff and not only the German philosopher. Douglas Adams best known for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Malcolm McLaren the English impresario who promoted The Sex Pistols and Bow Wow Wow.

Everywhere has something that is worth seeing. A little gem, a story, a secret.

I am not only about popular places like Rome, Paris and New York. Hell, I have never even been to Rome or New York but I would never discount going there.

Not so long ago, I backpacked the breakaway states of Abkhazia, Transnistria and the Ghost City of Agdam in Nagorno Karabakh.

Backpacking Tiraspol, capital of unrecognised breakaway state of Transnistria or Trans-Dniester:

I backpack countries and I backpack territories, micronations and self declared de facto states and the more obscure the better.

A long time ago, I backpacked the self-declared Republic of Christiania, within the Danish capital of Copenhagen. So you can 'do' nice in the morning and do obscure in the afternoon.

Jonny Blair backpacked The Republic of Christiania and did a full write up.

Back in 2018, when I backpacked Lithuania, on the trail of another micronation, I day-tripped and backpacked The Republic of Uzupis, a small bohemian neighbourhood who declared independence in 1997.

I wasn't a good blogger then and didn't know the importance of documenting everything but I got a photo of the sign at least.
