How to travel from Malaga to Gibraltar

How I travelled by bus from Malaga to La Linea de la Concepcion before crossing the border, from Spain to Gibraltar on foot.

I took the bus from Malaga to La Linea de la Concepcion, before crossing the runway on foot, into the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar, to backpack the Rock of Gibraltar.

Avanza bus from Malaga to La Linea de la Concepcion (I bought the ticket the old school style, from the ticket office, practising my Spanish is the name of the game here, and I paid in cash €15.78 2024 price):

Spain and the British territory of Gibraltar removed their border fence on 15 July 2026 under a landmark EU-UK treaty, but what does it mean for travellers?

The passport control offices are closed, so you can just walk across.

Gibraltar is twinned with Goole, Ballymena, Funchal and Kingston:

And what a unique border crossing. After the border comes the runway.

Crossing the runway at Gibraltar International Airport is part of the experience.

What a novelty. Walking across a fucking runway (dodging the British Airways and EasyJet flights in the process):

Welcome to Gibraltar, my first British Overseas Territory. Around a year later, I backpacked Akrotiri and Dhekelia, two Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus, which are also classed as British Overseas Territories.
