What, no Coffee at the McDonald’s in Paramaribo?

This was a total shock for me.
At the McDonald’s on Keizerstraat, in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, there is no coffee on the menu.
Can you Adam and Eve it?
Nope, me neither.
I have never been to a McDonald’s that doesn’t have coffee on the menu.
Have you?
Did you also know that you can buy me a coffee via PayPal/KoFi?
The travels have been pretty tough lately. The 20-hour minivan ride from Lethem to Georgetown, pretty much wiped me out.
Then it took 10 hours to travel from Georgetown to Paramaribo and boy, I was looking for some normality and to enjoy a coffee in air-conditioned comfort.
The thing about McDonald’s coffee is that you know what you are getting.
From Beijing to Cape Town and from Mexico City to Panama, the coffee is the same.
You know the taste, you know what to expect. You won’t be disappointed.
OK, I was disappointed. On two occasions.
Once in Schiphol Airport and once in Helsinki.
Both times the coffee was too hot. They burnt it.
But they can be forgiven.
How many times have I had a coffee at other establishments and been disappointed? Countless.
The thing is, they always have air-con, free Wi-Fi and toilets. It is also cheaper than everywhere else.
A coffee at the McDonald’s in Mexico City costs 20 pesitos. That’s around a dollar. Only street Nescafé is cheaper.
In the nice cafés in the city, a coffee will cost upwards from 50 pesos. And sometimes they fail to deliver.
In Kourou, French Guiana, where I visited some days after backpacking Paramaribo, the coffee at the McDonald’s there was Lavazza.
Imagine!
I asked the girl on reception at the Twenty4 Hostel where I was staying in Paramaribo.
She was as shocked that McDonald’s even sold coffee in other countries as I was shocked that the one here didn’t.
“There is little café culture here”.
The Surinamese are not big coffee drinkers.
She said she drinks tea, water and sodas. And that coffee made her jittery.
Every day is a school day with Nomadic Backpacker.
I think that it is important, when running a travel blog, to write about things you discover and not just about the typical tourist things.
Many of my blog posts are about getting there and away. Without the journey, there are no destinations.
And sometimes I include posts like these. This is NomadicBackpacker!

LOL on Schiphol! I thought it was just me. The coffee I got there was a little burned but also way too hot. Other than that, this stuff tasted the same from Nadi, to Kuala Lumpur, to Colombo, to Prague, back to the States. Ditto for anything I eat at McDonald’s. Fries, etc.
Yeah Coffee should not be too hot. Plenty good coffee in Colombia though they drink tinto which is the non export stuff. Bought some export quality for my wife.
I found that hard to believe when I saw your headline, Trevor, that I had to read the post. Good to know when I travel internationally again. Thank you.
I wonder if the tea had any caffeine?
Someone wrote on FB that one McD in Karachi didnt have burgers on the menu. Well McD in many if not all Muslim countries dont serve BEEF burgers but had substitutes but a McD with no coffee, pretty amazing. No tea either. a pure JUNK FOOD McD in Suriname!!
That is so interesting! Thanks for sharing about it.
