How to get an e-Visa for Uganda

To visit the Republic of Uganda, you must apply for an e-Visa. As of June 2023, this is the online process for getting a single-entry tourist visa.

Sadly, the Uganda Visa on Arrival is no longer available.

This is the future of travel. Everyone is going down the E-Visa route, and with it, gone is the freedom of overland travel, as many want you to upload onward/return tickets, and this, for most countries, means a flight.

Yes, you can buy fake tickets or make one up yourself, but why should you have to?

Here is the website you need to use to obtain your e-Visa for Uganda, but sometimes the website is down:

The Uganda E-Visa application form is less wordy than the one for Kenya.

For the single-entry tourist visa, I needed to upload 4 documents:

  • Photo of Passport
  • Passport-size photo
  • Yellow Fever Certificate
  • Return ticket

All photo documents must be less than 250kb.

I stipulated the Busia border crossing from Kenya as the point of entry. I wanted to travel overland into Rwanda. There is no option on the form to say this. And you must upload an onward ticket.

I had a Kenya Airways ticket out of Nairobi. I uploaded that, hoping that it was sufficient. It was.

You’ll need to make the payment online, which is 50 USD.

I applied before 9 am and had the approval email at around 3 pm.

You will receive an ‘approval letter’ via email, which you must print out in colour before arrival, and you must still supply all supporting documents at the border.

Unlike Kenya, where you just get a stamp, when entering Uganda, you get a full-page sticker:
