Visiting the National Museum of Mexican Railways (Museo Nacional De Los Ferrocarriles Mexicanos) in Puebla as part of a day trip from Mexico City.

at the National Museum of Mexican Railways in Puebla

Having visited the Museo de los Ferrocarrileros in Mexico City, I was keen to visit the museum in Puebla.

I visited the railway museum in Puebla back in 2021, during the pandemic, with my now wife. We backpacked the museum and then the city as part of a day trip from Mexico City, although a 2-night trip would be so much better.

The National Museum of Mexican Railways stands on the original station site that once served both the Mexican Railroad – Mexico’s first railway, running from Mexico City to Veracruz – and the Southern Mexican Railroad, which connected Puebla to Oaxaca.

The station in the City of Puebla was opened in 1869 by President Benito Juárez.

The Museo Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Mexicanos in Puebla opened on May 5, 1988.

Unlike at the Railway Museum in Mexico City, there were several locomotives and carriages which you could climb up into to pretend you realised your boyhood dream of becoming an engine driver:

How to get from Mexico City to Puebla by bus

Buses depart regularly from TAPO – Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros de Oriente in CDMX to the CAPU – Central de Autobuses de Puebla.

Although Puebla is only 110 km from CDMX, it took us almost 4 hours to get there due to bad traffic, but it is scheduled to take 2 hours 10 minutes.

A better way would be to stay for a night or two.

From the bus station to the railway museum is 4.3 km, and 6 km to the historical centre. Numerous buses are running from the bus station to the Zócalo, but you’ll have to ask which one.
