El Insurgente Tren Interurbano Mexico - Toluca

Posted: November 5, 2024 | Tagged: Mexico, Mexico City

The El Insurgente Train - when complete - will run from Observatorio in Mexico City to Zinacantepec (Toluca) in neighbouring Mexico State. Just now, it is only possible from Santa Fe. I travelled from Santa Fe to Zinacantepec and back again on the El Insurgente Train.

The first section of the 'CDMX - Toluca commuter train' Between Zinacantapec and Lerna was completed in September 2023.

The second section from Lerna to Santa Fe was opened in September 2024.

The final section will link Santa Fe to Observatorio and is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2024, but having seen some of the last section, I am pretty sure this ain't gonna happen.

The whole project will be 57.7 kilometres in length with 4.9 km of viaduct, 48,4 km of elevated viaduct and 4.9 km of tunnel.

Each train is made up of 5 carriages with a total capacity of 719 passengers.

I have taken the Tren Suburbano from Buena Vista to Cuautitlán. I have ridden the Metro, the MetroBus, the TrenLigero and the TrolleyBus. The Tren Interurbano completes the jigsaw.

When completed, the 7 stations will be Zinacantepec, Toluca Centro, Metepec, Lerma, Santa Fe, Alvaro Obregón and Observatorio, which is the end of the Pink Line, Linea 1 of the Mexico City Metro.

As soon as it's complete, I will be travelling the whole route in its entirety, but for now, it's just the section from Santa Fe to Zinacantepec.

I took the metro to Tacubaya via Centro Medico, and then took an RTP bus (8 pesos) to Santa Fe.

It's a short walk from the bus stop to Santa Fe Station:

On the above screen grab, the “Santa Fé” Station - México—Toluca Train is marked in red. The green flag marks the bus stop coming from Tacubaya, and the yellow star marks the bus stop going back to Tacubaya.

How much does it cost to go from Santa Fe to Toluca on the Interurban Train?

The fares depend on how far you travel. As of November 2024, the fares between the stations looked like this:
fares for the Interurbano train Mexico
So if you are travelling between Zinacantepec, Toluca Centro, Metepec and Lerma, the fare is 15 pesos. To go from any one of these 4 stations to Santa Fe, it is 45 pesos. Santa Fe to any of the other 4 stations is 60 pesos.

You have 2 options: buy a ticket from the little ticket office or use your Metro Card, which you can top up in the 'Compra y Recarga' machines, but only with cash.

There is no option to top up the Metro Card using a bank card, and there is no option to pay with contactless, like there is on the Metro or MetroBus. Cash Loyal.

Once completed, the Mexico City to Toluca train will cut the commute time, help reduce traffic and pollution and allow commuters a stress-free journey to work in one of the greatest cities in the world.
