Hiking Arthur's Seat - Edinburgh
May 4 2023 | Tagged: United Kingdom
I went and backpacked Edinburgh for a few days but ventured away from the City to bag my 3rd Scottish peak. Arthur's Seat is just 251m high, so it is a long way from being a Munro (3000ft or 914m), but it's an easy and rewarding hike.
In 1992 on my 2nd trip to Scotland, I had bagged the double of Ben Vorlich 985m and Stuc a'Chroin 975m what are still my only 2 Munros.
Yes, Arthur's Seat is a long way from being a Munro but it is a very rewarding hike and I can thoroughly recommend setting aside a few hours to go and bag it.

How long does it take to hike Arthur's Seat
This is a stupid question. How long is a piece of string? It depends on many things, like your level of fitness, the speed you like to walk at and how many times you stop to take photos.
For me personally, getting from my hostel in the Grass Market to the start of the walk, took 20 minutes and from there to the summit, just 25 minutes more.
The climb is straight forward and the path, easy to follow but this being the UK the cloud can and does come down very quickly and you can become disorientated.
And in wet weather the rocks are slippery so a trail shoe is a good idea. Leave the Converses for the pub.

I descended off the summit down the southern side, a path which takes you to Queen's Drive, then ascended the path to Salisbury Crags:
I made a short recce the day before, a short detour off the Arthur's Seat path, to take a look at St Anthony's Chapel.
