How to Save Money and Reduce Plastic Waste as a Long Term Traveller

December 16 2020 | Tagged: Mexico

In staying long term, you can save yourself more cash by changing the way you buy water. You can take advantage of the fact that you can use all the 20 litres of water before your stay is up.

Refillable water in Zipolite
In Zipolite, 1.5 litres of agua mineral, will cost you 15MXN or more. That's 75 US cents. A 6 litre bottle costs about 25MXN.

It's 30 degrees C in the day, 20 at night. In this heat I can drink 2 bottles a day. That's 1.50USD and 2 empty bottles thrown to the wind. Over 1 month, thats 45 USD and 60 empty plastic bottles a day, just to keep hydrated. Some days I drink 4 litres.

Having secured a room for 1 month, I am now in a position to buy a reusable/refillable 19 litre water bottle. You pay a deposit of 50MXN for the bottle and the actual water is just 16MXN, for 19 freaking litres. 5 or 6 days of water and no bottles thrown to the wind. Win-win all round. For the environment and my pocket.
