Cart & Horses - The Birthplace of Iron Maiden

March 16, 2023 | Tagged: United Kingdom

The Cart & Horses is regarded as the Birthplace of Iron Maiden. They played many a gig there in the early days. And a visit here fitted in nicely after my music-themed tour I made the other week, Album Covers Shot in London.

If you're a heavy metal fan, in particular, a British heavy metal fan, as I was in the 80s, perhaps the finest pilgrimage you could ever make is to go and drink a pint or even better a bottle of Trooper 666, or anyone of the other Iron Maiden Beers at the Cart & Horses in Stratford, East London.

Just in case you have not heard of Iron Maiden (where have you been?), they are a British heavy metal band formed by Steve Harris back in 1975.

Their lineup has changed many times over the years but both Steve Harris and Dave Murray have appeared on every release perhaps they rose to fame in 1982 when Bruce Dickinson replaced Paul Di'Anno on vocals and they released The Number of the Beast which reached No. #1 in the UK album charts with 2 killer tracks released as singles, Run to the Hills which reached No. #7 in the UK single charts and Number of the Beast

Before Dickinson came along, Iron Maiden had released 2 albums 'Iron Maiden' and 'Killers' which is perhaps my favourite Iron Maiden album, which I owned on cassette.

I later bought the 'The Number of the Beast' album and the double LP 'Live After Death'. And was gifted a 12" picture disc single, at some point in 1984.

I drank a celebratory bottle of Trooper 666 (The track, Trooper was inspired by the Charge of the Light Brigade which took place at the Battle of Balaclava in 1854 during the Crimean War).

And recent research shows that 666, not 600, British Cavalrymen charged the Russian forces. 666 The Number of the Beast.

It is said that when Bernard Hinault the French cyclist from the late 70s and 80s wanted to win, he wrote in black marker on his forehead the number 666.

It is perhaps a human number...

Trooper 666 is a 6.6%vol limited edition dark beer and it's freaking good:

I followed up with a 4.7% lager "Trooper":

If I'd booked a hotel in town I would have drank a few more Trooper 666 beers.

Flashbacks to my teenage years when I had long hair and wore a denim jacket.

So before I got too pissed to make it back, I added the Cart & Horses to my list of Places I must take Miss CDMX.
