5 Nutritious and filling meals in Oaxaca for less than 1US$

Posted: February 5, 2021 | Tagged: Mexico

Nomadic Backpacker's Cheap Eats in Oaxaca. Self-catering as a long term traveller. Nutritious, filling, cheap and delicious alternatives to eating out.
Nomadic Backpacker
I wrote a post on how to live on 10USD a day. But this included eating at the Mercado 20 de Noviembre.

I am now eating 3 or 4 home-cooked meals at just 50 to 80 US cents each. And that together with the fact that I am on #DryFebruary, my budget is more like 8US$ a day. Yes, my single room at the Andaina Hostel is just 5US$ a night when paid monthly or as I wrote a review I am getting that when I pay weekly.

I prefer to eat 3 small meals a day and snack on 3 Peso avocados or 7 Peso mangos. And drink Lemongrass tea with a squeeze of lime.

The kitchen at the Andaina Hostel has been refitted I am now making full use of it. Prices quoted are in MXN, Mexican Peso and is based on 1US$ =20Peso.

Note: Gourmet foodies look away now. This is for long term low budget, health-conscious travellers & backpackers.

1 carrot to eat whist cooking 2.45Peso

5th meal. Lentil mix on fresh tacos with a drizzle of salsa roja - muy picante
Lentils and tacos
This is a super yummy combo. My healthy combo lentil mix with fresh tacos, just placed over the gas for a bit before adding the topping. The salsa is 'muy' but it is not too hot.

Lentil mix 6.50Peso, tacos are just 7.50Peso for ½kg or about 2cm of them or 25-30 of them. Cost is negligible. The bottle of sauce is just 15Peso and it will last 2 weeks or so.

Food is fuel! Visual presentation ain't gonna win me points on #ReadySteadyCook but then again, these people wouldn't last 5 minutes in my world.

I am almost on a meat-free diet again. The meals above are supplemented with tuna and tomato baguettes, lots of amazingly fresh mangoes, avocados, raw carrots, nuts.
