Travelling to Germany with a Dog
If you are travelling to Germany from another EU country or Switzerland, your dog must be microchipped, have been vaccinated against rabies, and have a pet passport. However, if you are travelling from outside the EU, you will also need an EU health certificate.
Dog-Friendly Accommodation in Germany
Almost all hotels in Germany allow dogs to stay. And that's not all; most places also allow you to take your dog to the restaurant while you dine. However, it's essential to do some research before you travel to ensure the one you choose accepts pets.
Eating Out in Germany with a Dog
Most restaurants in Germany allow dogs both inside and outside. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule. For example, most kebab shops do not allow dogs to enter the premises. Small cafes and traditional brauhaus restaurants are your best option if in doubt.
Travelling on Public Transport with Your Dog
No matter how large your dog may be, almost all forms of public transport allow dogs to travel. This is excellent news for people wanting to explore Germany, as public transport reaches nearly every corner of the country.
Sightseeing in Germany with a Dog
Germany has lots of things to see and do. Thankfully, the majority of these experiences can be enjoyed with your pup. Unlike in France, dogs are allowed in most outdoor spaces, including castles, palaces and gardens in Germany.
Tips for Travelling with a Dog
Here are some of our top tips for travelling to Germany with a dog:
- Ensure you have copies of pet-related documents – when travelling abroad, it's not only important to take copies of your own documents with you, such as your passport and visa, but it's also essential to take copies of any pet-related documents. You can learn more about whether you need a visa to travel to Germany online.
- Download some dog-friendly apps – there are some great apps that can help you when travelling with a dog, including apps that show you nearby walks, apps that can help you to find dog-friendly restaurants, hotels, and attractions and first aid apps that give you instructions for common pet emergencies.
- Shop around for hotels – many hotels charge extra for dogs. However, not all of them do. If you're travelling on a budget, shop around to find a hotel where your pet can stay for free.
- Purchase a pet carrier – although dogs enjoy walking, they may struggle to keep up after a long day. To overcome this, purchasing a pet carrier might be a good idea. This way, your buddy can be with you without suffering from exhaustion.
- Think about others – when travelling with a dog, it's essential to understand that not everyone likes dogs.
As you can see, travelling to Germany with a dog couldn't be easier. You can't go far wrong if you and your pooch have the correct paperwork and vaccinations and do your research before you go.
