Flying Mérida to Mexico City with Viva Aerobus Flight 1101
August 26 2021
Flying with Mexican budget airline Viva Aerobus from Mérida to Mexico City.
After a balls-up with Expedia (more on this soon), I ended up buying my ticket directly at the Viva Aerobus office, in Mérida. It's up on Calle 60, 3km north in the Plaza Americana. Visit their site on vivaaerobus.
24 hours before my flight I checked in online. Very easy and printed out my boarding card.
12 hours or less, you need to fill out a Covid-19 health declaration. Again, very easy.
You will be given a QR code as a PDF. Download it. Though mine was not checked at any time in the airport, you do need to submit it.
I chose Viva Aerobus over Aeroméxico and Volaris as they now both charge outrageous fees for checked-in AND carry-on bags.
With Viva Aerobus you get 15 kg checked-in baggage and up to 10 kg carry-on as standard with a personal bag, like a handbag or laptop bag.
No snacks were provided but you can purchase on board but as with all flights, the menu is expensive. And right now, they only accept payment with credit or debit card.
Airside in Mérida International Airport, there are no water fountains so you need to buy water for the flight. A 500ml bottle cost me 30MXN.

How to get to the Mérida International Airport
It is only 7km from Mérida Centro to the airport. Had it been 20 degrees cooler I would have walked.
Of course, tourists and flashpackers can take a taxi for 200MXN
Me, forever looking for a good deal, I asked at the tourist office on Calle 57A who informed me that I could simply take any colectivo heading to Uman, Itzincab, Roble. These travel on the highway that passes the airport. Easy.
They depart from a small colectivo station on Calle 69, between Calles 54 and 52.
I paid just 8MXN. Much better than 200MXN. It would have cost me more than 8MXN to replace the liquid lost in sweat. #TravelSmart.
This is why or how I can seemingly be away forever whereas those who opt for the taxi have to go home early. Think about it.
I should add here, that these colectivos are not really suitable for those who carry anything mote than what you can balance on your lap. People are in and out all the time. Bags on the floor, getting in the way will be frowned upon.
