ATMs in Uganda – Free Withdrawals at the Diamond Trust Bank

I checked all of the ATMs in Uganda. The Diamond Trust Bank ATM was the only one with free withdrawals.

Having crossed the border from Kenya at Busia, Jinja was my first stop. And of course, the first task is to find an ATM. You can easily find ATMs in Uganda, but some don’t work (either they are empty or don’t accept foreign cards), and some have very high withdrawal charges.

Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) Uganda:

The DTB (Diamond Trust Bank) did not have any ATM withdrawal charges when using my UK-issued Monzo Mastercard.

Notes on other ATMs in Uganda:

The UBA Bank Uganda: Accepts both Visa and Mastercard. 3,400 UGX withdrawal fee. This fee is displayed on the ATM screen allowing you to accept or decline.

The I&M Bank Uganda charges 5,750 UGX per withdrawal and did NOT give me the option to decline the transaction. I only saw the charge on my phone later in the day.

The Centenary Bank: In theory this bank accepts both Visa and Mastercard but failed to give me money. Reasons unknown.

The EcoBank: I used the ECOBank ATM in Kenya and in Zambia with no withdrawal fee, but here in Uganda, I was charged a massive 12,100 UGX, and there was no notification displayed on the ATM screen, giving me the option to decline the transaction. I only saw the charge later.

Tropical Bank Uganda: Accepts Visa only. No details on fees.

Baroda Bank Uganda: Accepts Visa only. No details on fees.
