How to get to Ivato International Airport using public transport

​This super cheap option on how to get to the Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo, Madagascar, is probably only suitable for die-hard backpackers travelling with a backpack that won't cause an inconvenience to other passengers and that you can happily balance on your lap for more than an hour.

6 weeks ago, I rode the Taxi-Brousse from Ivato to Tala where I spent the night before taking another, 2 days later into Tana itself.

Here, I go into a bit more detail on how to take the Taxi-Brousse back to Ivato International Airport.

Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo Madagascar is served by Ligne D Taxi-Brousse. 

These leave when full, every few minutes from the following spot in Antananarivo:
It's about a 20-minute walk from the Old Railway Station.

You are looking for a Taxi-Brousse with IVATO D on it. Like this:
​Jump in. Be prepared to get squashed, space is very tight. Not the ideal option for those who travel with the kitchen sink. And probably only suitable for die-hard backpackers. Of course, it's super cheap, but it's not always about the money. I don't know any other way.

The fare from Tana to the Ivato International Airport is just 800Ar. With 5,000Ar being 1€, this is one of the cheapest options to get to an airport anywhere around the world.

The trip takes an hour. Yes, the traffic is horrendous! I rode it to the last stop which is just a hundred metres from the Manoir Rouge Hotel which makes a great option if you have a night flight, as I was.
