Relaxing at the Sky Lagoon Geothermal Spa in Reykjavik

Posted: April 25 2024 | Tagged: Iceland

Pure indulgence at the Sky Lagoon Thermal Spa in Reykjavik, Iceland.

On my last day in Reykjavik, I backpacked the Sky Lagoon.

I loved my stay in Iceland and what a way to round that week off.

Why did I choose the Sky Lagoon over the more famous Blue Lagoon?

Just in case I need to explain myself.

  • The Sky Lagoon is on the edge of the city. I walked there from the Kex Hostel. 1 hr 10 minutes.
  • The Blue Lagoon is 52 km from the city centre and requires an expensive transfer.
  • The Sky Lagoon is not affected by the ongoing eruptions at Fagradalsfjall near where the Blue Lagoon is located. 3 times it was closed in the mornings due to the wind direction, blowing poisonous gas directly over the lagoon and 1 time it was closed all day.

I had backpacked the city, visited the Natural History Museum, done the Golden Circle tour, attempted to go on a Puffin Island boat trip. I was up for some relaxation. I booked my Pure Lite Experience at Sky Lagoon.
Pure Lite is the basic of the 'experiences' on offer at Sky Lagoon. Totally OK for me.

You get access to the thermal pool. Towels are provided and you are reminded to take on drinking water as the warm water of the pool can make you dehydrated quickly.

You can certainly book a complete self-pampering package if your wallet is deep enough.

I had booked it for 10.30 am. The walk there took less than expected and at 9.45 I was ready to go in. This was no problem for the very polite staff. All in a day's work eh!

Having paid online, you are given a wristband with which you can operate your locker and use it to buy from the Lagoon Bar or at the cafe afterwards. You can settle your tab at the end or you can even link your bank card.

You choose your locker and get into your swimwear. I bought some shorts in Glasgow just for my thermal spa trips in Iceland.

You are required to shower, removing your swimwear first. And then you enter the lagoon:

The water is wonderfully warm. And it's not the rotten egg experience like in Rotorua, New Zealand.

Relax and unwind:

If you are here with friends you could enjoy a beer or even champagne. They don't allow drunken behaviour and glasses are plastic, just in case you are wondering.
