Travelling Across the Chott El Djerid Salt Lake in Tunisia

Posted: January 23 2020

Having visited Ras en Jela, the Northernmost point of Africa, I travelled across the Chott El Djerid salt lake, the lowest point in Tunisia @ -17m/-55.8ft below sea level.
Chott El Djerid is a large endorheic salt lake, meaning there is no outflow to rivers or oceans, only evaporation.

In Arabic: شط الجريد‎ Šoṭṭ el-Jarīd, and translates as 'Lagoon of the Land of Palms' and is the lowest point in Tunisia @ -17m/-55.8ft below sea level.

From Sfax, I travelled to Douz, stayed a few nights and then up to Kibili and took a regular louage to Tozeur.

There is no need for a specially adapted vehicle. Nor do you need to take a tour.

All you have to do is take a regular louage from Kibili, as they built a perfectly good 2-lane highway across the Chott El Djerid.

You can actually drive on the salt flats, but the surface isn't always firm, so it's not recommended.
