My stay at the Hotel San Francisco, San Pedro La Laguna, Lake Atitlán, Guatemala.
This is not a sponsored post. I am just writing about it for kicks.
The Hotel San Francisco is one of the older establishments here in San Pedro. And it is where I wanted to stay.

A guy in Xela told me that he had stayed here just as I was leaving and confirmed that they were not listed on the booking sites. He had a room for 35 Quetzales, possibly with a shared bathroom. Slightly less than 5 USD a night.
Despite having booked somewhere else for 2 nights, I headed here instead. Booking sent me a NO SHOW NOTICE. Not sure how I will be asked to pay the fee when said hotel doesn't accept credit cards. Only my 2nd NO SHOW in all these years.
They wanted 50 Quetzales a night. I said that a buddy had paid just 35. They wouldn't budge from 40 if I stayed a week.
Location: It's in the old town, not lakeside. Morning market 100m away. Can buy at 5 Q beers at the end of the alley, a bread shop around the corner. Old town location means it's quiet at night:

The room: 5.20 USD a night for a room with my own bathroom, good mattress, no bed bugs.
Typical Central American suicide shower. I am not sure why tourists feel the need to fiddle with the electrics and moan that they got zapped:
Not everything is wonderful. That's the beauty of unsponsored posts. I list the pros and cons.
The wifi is crap, probably because there are too many people connected to 1 modem. The power goes off quite regularly. Not really the hotels' fault. But worth mentioning. This is San Pedro.
The kitchen. Hmm, the kitchen is a disaster. It's half outside. The utensils haven't been replaced in 20 years. There's a chicken walking and shitting all over the place. Flies everywhere. I don't use it other than to boil eggs.

The pros far outweigh the cons (except when it's raining).
I need a good nights sleep. Firm mattress, no free-living tenants in the bed and no bar next door. Happy long term traveller.
And for my sanity, a balcony with awesome views. A better kitchen would have been better but I can live without it.
I am all about rooftops and balconies:
