Captain Morgan Hostel - Lago de Coatepeque - El Salvador
February 26, 2022
I wanted to climb the Santa Ana Volcano, so I headed to Captain Morgan Hostel, the only budget option on the shores of Lago de Coatepeque.
After a week spent backpacking Santa Ana with visits to the Casa Blanca and Tazumal archaeological sites and doing the Ruta de las Flores, the last thing on my list was to hike the Santa Ana Volcano.
The Captain Morgan Hostel is the only backpacker option at Lake Coatepeque and it makes a great alternative base for those wanting to hike the Santa Ana volcano.
It is also a great place to come and chill for a few days whether you hike the Volcano or not.
Or come at the weekend to have fun at the pirate parties.

How to get from Santa Ana to the Captain Morgan Hostel Lake Coatepeque
Bus #242 goes from the Bus Terminal Francisco Lara Pineda (10a Avenida Sur) to Lago de Coatepeque.
I turned up at the Bus Terminal "Francisco Lara Pineda" and my bus left just before 11 am. The fare is 0.43 USD. The journey is 1 hour 30 and will stop right at the Captain Morgan Hostel.

They have an on-site bar and restaurant:
There is a stove for your use, just ask the kitchen for any pots that you need. The shops are in El Congo 7km away, a pupuseria, 300m to the left and a gas station 20 minute walk to the right.
There is bit of a pirate theme:

And morning light:
Getting to the start of the Santa Ana Volcano hike, in true Nomadic Backpacker style, I wrote a complete blog post dedicated to that.
The post is live, and contains so many wonderful photos so make sure you check it out but here is a teaser of what you can expect:
