Nomadic Backpacker Naked in Mexico
January 4 2022 | Tagged: Mexico
For the 2nd Christmas running, I found myself in Zipolite, Mexico's Only nudist beach, Playa Zipolite, this time with Miss CDMX. Actually we met here, and hooked up here; Christmas 2020.
I don't know if you know this, but I was never a beach person before I came to Zipolite. Beach life can become addictive. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Flights from Mexico City to Zipolite
To save travel time we flew, CDMX to Huatulco. Volaris, flight #778 took just 55 minutes.
From the Bahías De Huatulco International Airport, walk out to the highway, 10 mins or so and get a 'taxi colectivo' heading to the right, for 50 pesos each, to the crossroads just south of Pochutla and get another 'taxi colectivo' or pick-up or as we did, carry on with the same driver for 75 pesos more per person, to Zipolite. Journey time, less than 1 hour compared to 2 hours plus when changing vehicles and picking up and dropping off others.
Cheap Sleeps in Zipolite
One of the cheapest options, in Zipolite, is the Posada Brisa Marina, owned and run for the last 27 years by Daniel Wiener from California.
The piece de resistance of staying at the Brisa Marina are the hammocks.
Playa Zipolite - Mexico's only official nudist beach
Anything goes on Zipolite. There is quite the (mostly male) gay scene and naked bodies of all shapes and sizes are paraded up and down the beach though this year was more of a clothed vibe than last year.
The sunsets here, are to die for:

And if you can drag yourself out of your bed, sunrises at around 7 am should not be missed:
Warning: There are very strong under currents in Zipolite. Life guards patrol the beaches. Everyday they have to go rescue those who get pulled out too far.
Where to eat in Zipolite:
Our favourite café for breakfast is Le Castelet, smack in the middle of the main street which runs parallel to the beach.

Omelet de espinacas con queso for me and "Enmoladas" con tasajo y frijoles for Miss CDMX:
Or the Hot Cakes with maple syrup:

Another great breakfast option is café KellyKo:

Coffee with Miss CDMX:
There are a couple of bakeries in town. The Trigo have a great selection of pastries, in particular the Rol de canela, Quiche and croissants. They also do coffee to go.
For dinner, our favourite place is the Sal y Pimienta, right on the beach. The portions are BIG and the prices very low for what you get and of course, right on the beach so it is a very popular place so go early and be prepared to wait.
Every time I went for the filete de pescado, al ajo. Dorado filet with garlic, served with chips, rice and salad:

If you need to get a Covid test, PCR or Antigen, there's a mobile clinic in town:
Backpacking Zipolite
If you want to explore more than just the hammock, Playa Camarón is a secluded beach not far from town:
Further afield you can go to Puerto Angel or Mazunte, by colectivo.

There is a night street market, with some food stands set up, which will become an evening ritual. There are a few bars on the main street and on the beach itself.
Getting from Zipolite to Huatulco International Airport
Miss CDMX sadly had to cut her trip short, so I travelled back to Mexico City alone.
I wrote a separate post on how to get from Zipolite to Huatulco and has more detail than this post had, so make sure you check it out.
