I No Longer Travel Simply For The Pure Joy Of Travelling
I no longer travel simply for the Pure Joy of Travelling.
Sure I still love being on the road, living simply with my meagre possessions, forever away.
But now I have another motive.
I travel chasing material for blog posts that will inspire a younger version of myself.
To go to places with the intention of bringing you the information you need to get there yourself under your own steam and at minimal cost.
Such details used to be only in the LonelyPlanet. But who liked to lug around heavy guide books? We did because we had no other choice.
Of course, now you can get the digital versions but when information is out there and for free, who wants to pay for a guidebook that no longer caters for the budget traveller?
But the information the traveller needs is spread across several resources. You need to combine details gleaned from MapsMe, GoogleMaps and an assortment of travel blogs. No one source provides all the details.
Google Maps was the best. Now that people favour MapsMe as the GPS works much better, GMaps is falling behind. I am also finding many things simply listed in the wrong place.
'A bad map is worse than no map at all.'
I love all the logistics. Popular blogs bring you details of the destination and skip the all-important information of how to actually get there. Any fool can take a tour or tourist shuttle. They also like to focus on 'how great I am'. This is after all, where the money is but for travellers who gives a shit? I know I don't.
I like doing things my way. I won't be following the crowd like a lost sheep on the worn-out Gringo Trail. I'd rather blaze my own backpacker trail using local transport, avoiding the tourist shuttles that are there to assist the new generation of travellers who love their comforts too much.
I want Nomadic Backpacker to become the only Long Term Travel blog you will ever need. Of course, I can not even attempt to cover just a tiny fraction of the world on my own.
Maybe I need to spread my wings and get like-minded travellers to contribute.
That was one of my ideas years ago.
To have a network of reliable travel buddies who reported back about crossing land borders around the world.
Of course, most of my contacts from years ago all went soft and settled down.
Maybe a 2nd travel blog focusing on border crossings around the world.
An idea is formulating!
