Growing up in a small town in South Georgia (US), I always dreamed of getting out to see the world. I started by signing up for one of those bus tours through Europe when I was still in high school. Since that day I have travelled every chance I have gotten and visited 22 countries.
I am a year into a 2-3 year backpacking trip around the world.

1. Japan
Japan is a country I dreamed about travelling to my entire life. In 2018 I was lucky enough to spend three weeks there. With the Japan rail pass, it's very easy to get around the country.
With a history dating back thousands of years and some of the best food on earth, it should be on everyone's bucket list.

2. Mexico
I started my around the world trip in Mexico a year ago. I had originally planned to stay a month or two but ended up staying for five. It's a big country and there is a lot to see and do.
I particularly enjoyed Southern Mexico. The States of Oaxaca and Chiapas are wonderful.
There are beautiful beaches and mountains. You can find dishes there that you will not see anywhere else in the country.
I felt like I just scratched the surface. I met many travellers that had been there a year or longer. I understand why. It's an amazing country.

3. Ecuador
The Galapagos Islands is the first thing people think of when it comes to Ecuador. It shouldn't be. Mainland Ecuador has a lot to offer for a relatively small country.
The biodiversity from north to south is amazing.
From the high elevation of Quito and Cotopaxi to the Amazon jungle to the Pacific beaches, it has it all. The Ecuadorian people are some of the friendliest I have met. I spent two months there but I could have stayed a lot longer.
