7 Reasons To Start A Travel Blog
Published April 8, 2022 by Nomadic Backpacker
Whether you are a low-budget backpacker or a luxury traveller, here I give you 7 reasons why you should start a travel blog. And as an update, I wrote a post about why you should NOT start a travel blog. Give it a read!
1. A blog gives you purpose beyond the travels themselves
Yeah, it's all great and all, being on the road for months and months but sometimes you need a purpose beyond the travels themselves.
Go study a language, learn to play the guitar. Or start a travel blog and show people the world as you have seen it.

2. Photo Travel Journal
Whether you do anything with it or not, a travel blog is a great way to have a photo travel journey.
I started my first blog, 'whitemonkeytravels', simply as an alternative platform (to FB) for showing my photos and it has developed from that.
When WhiteMonkeyTravels got hacked in 2016, I took it offline and then restarted with NomadicBackpacker in 2018. In 2019 I bought my own domain and now, I am in it for the long haul.

3. Creative Outlet
A travel blog can bring out the creative side in you. I am a perfectionist. Everything has to be just so. I spend ages tweaking my blog: margins, fonts, layout. For me, the blog has to be aesthetically pleasing. Attention to detail is everything!
In a world where more than 50% of all traffic is on mobile devices (and growing all the time), I am amazed how many travel blogs are not optimized for mobile devices. Ads very commonly overshoot the page. For me this is annoying. All you have to do is to code them in as page width 100%.
Having a travel blog also inspires me to create the perfect photo. You will get more clicks if you have top-class photos!

4. Free Accommodation
If you have a travel blog with a reasonable number of monthly users hitting you up, a reasonable number of monthly page views and a good social media following, you can, on the promise of mentioning the hostel or hotel on your travel blog, get a free night or two.
5. Fame
I was in the Despensa Familiar Supermarket in Panajachel, Guatemala last year, minding my own business, when the dude in front of me said, "You're that travel blogger, Nomadic Backpacker". Guilty as charged.
6. Fortune
If you put in the work, the sky's the limit. But I tell you, it is not as easy as some travel bloggers like to make out.
7. Postcards
A travel blog is a great way to let your friends and family keep track of you. A travel blog is the 21st Century version of the 'postcard'.
