Lockdown is the perfect time to fast
To fast is to abstain from food.
I have always wanted to fast. And now is the perfect time to try it. I always had physical jobs: running around a restaurant for 12 hours and putting in 15 hours of mountain running each week, or being a postman, doing double deliveries. I needed to eat to survive.
Now I am doing shit. I'm staying safe. I'm staying at home, like you are, hopefully.
I was getting my meals provided but the time came when this was no longer viable for the owners of the guest house. I totally get it. They put me in a room with a small kitchen. I can buy my own food and get creative, lol.
I took my last meal and last beer on the evening of April 9, at around 7 pm. But I'll say 8 pm just for certain.
What were my reasons for attempting a fast?
I wanted to give fasting a try to give my sensitive digestive system a rest. I eat lots, my body processes a large amount of food. I don't normally have trouble with bowel movements. If I go one day without needing the bathroom, I'm like OMG. I know people go days without going. Here in Kenya, I have been eating 3 meals a day. 2 of which were with some kind of beans. Beans are high in fibre. I am going 3 times a day. Minimum.
I do not need to lose weight. I am about 67 or 68 KG. That's about 148lbs in US money. I am just under 5'9".
Fasting is said to promote healthier skin and a body rebalance. Digesting food consumes a lot of energy. And when you fast, your body starts resetting itself. I could do with some 'better skin'. I don't know how long it would take to see any results but better skin was not the idea behind me fasting. I wanted to give my digestive system a rest.
I decided to try for 5 days.

I decided to try for 5 days.
End of the first 24 hour period:
No food, not even a biscuit of which I have in the fridge. Drinking weak black tea for a bit, then just water. No temptation to snack. No headache, just a grumbling belly.
They say that 1 day of dry fasting (no food no liquid), is equivalent to 3 days of liquid fasting (only consuming liquid). I don't believe going without liquid is good for you. Not even for 24 hours on a fast. I drink regularly, all the time. I also don't think it's good during Ramadan when it's 50 deg C out. Your body needs water. We can survive ages without food. Without water every few days our bodies would shut down. So a dry fast is totally out of the equation.
Just 21 hours into the second 24 hour period I succumbed!
I'd had no temptation to eat those biscuits all day. My belly was growling like a goodun but at 5 pm I ate the remaining 5 biscuits. I lasted (just) 45 hours without food. I didn't get breakfast until almost 9 am the next day. 61 hours with only 5 biscuits. Not bad but a long way off of my intended 5-day fast.
Not enough will power I guess. Had I not had those biscuits in the fridge, I would have had to have gone without. Maybe the hunger pains would have subsided in the night.
